Overview of achievements under Nagaland Forest Management Project by Divisional Management Unit, Kohima in Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience. Divisional Management Unit, Kohima Every year, the World Environment Day is being celebrated with different themes to raise awareness about environment issues. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 and is celebrated in over 100 countries worldwide. The Day serves as a platform for communities, individuals and various organisations to come together and take positive actions to protect the environment for the future generations. This year, the World Environment campaign focuses on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.” This theme emphasises on the collective effort needed to restore land and ecosystems, protect biodiversity, and combat climate change.

The Nagaland Forest Management Project (NFMP) is an initiative aimed at promoting sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation in Nagaland. Under this project, the Kohima Division has made significant achievement in restoring 172.86 hectares of Jhum area under NFMP villages viz. Zhadima ‘A’ village under Chiephobozou Range and Nsunyu, Phenwhenyu, Terogvunyu, Kandinu, Tseminyu, Tsosinyu and Ehunnu villages under Tseminyu Range. An approximate of 69,200 tree saplings was planted in the 172.86 hectares. Through this plantation, the Jhum Agro-Forestry approach has contributed to the environmental sustainability by reducing soil degradation and promoting biodiversity thereby improving the resilience of the ecosystem, enabling it to better withstand climate change and other environmental challenges. This remarkable effort not only helps to prevent soil erosion but also maintains soil fertility, which is crucial for sustaining agriculture in these Jhum areas.Zhadima Accelerating Land Restoration.
Preventing desertification is important for maintaining the health of ecosystems. Efficient water management is critical for preventing desertification, especially in areas where there is scarcity of water. Under the Mission Amrit Sarovar, which aims to conserve water for the future, the Amrit Sarovar at Tuophema PECCA (Protection and Expansion of Community Conservation Area) has undergone a remarkable rejuvenation, with the collective efforts of the entire community and the Nagaland Forest Management Project, Kohima Division. This collaborative initiative has not only revitalized the water body but also enhanced the lives of the local community and wildlife. Zhadima Accelerating Land Restoration.
The rejuvenation process began with the active participation of members from the Joint Forest Management Committee and the community, who worked together to clear the water body and surrounding areas of weeds. This concerted effort paved the way for the plantation of approximately 52,000 saplings of native species such as neem, toona, koroi, and titasopa, with the assistance of the community. The impact of the rejuvenation and maintenance of the water body has been profound, with the community now utilizing it as a reliable source of water for their agricultural activities. In addition, the community has started rearing fingerlings fish, which has not only enhanced their income but also improved their livelihood. The water body also serves as a vital source of water for collecting and fighting unforeseen wildfires in the future. Furthermore, the rejuvenation has led to an increase in the water level, making it an essential water hole for wildlife. This project showcases the power of community-led conservation and sustainable management of natural resources, demonstrating the positive outcomes that can be achieved when people come together to protect and preserve their environment. The Amrit Sarovar at Tuophema PECCA serves as model of collaborative conservation efforts, highlighting the potential for community-driven initiatives to drive positive change and promote environmental stewardship.Driving positive change and promoting environmental stewardship | MorungExpress | morungexpress.com
